National Father and Son Championship Final Stages 2001
The First Round games started on Saturday morning, with Malcolm & Steve Wade (Leicester) building up a lead of 12 - 5 after 10 ends against Derek & Ian Wones (North Walsham). The Wone's fought back taking a three on the twelfth and fourteenth ends, which helped them to build up their own lead of 17 -13 at 18 ends. The game was eventually settled with the Wade's taking the last three ends to win 18 -17. In another tight finish, Bob & Brett Arkley (Gateshead) had a lead of 12 - 3 against James & Gary Fitzgerald (Wey Valley) after 10 ends, then led 19 -13 after 18 ends, only to see the Fitzgerald's take the last three ends to win the game 20 - 19. Saturday afternoon saw the remaining First Round games being completed. Glenn & Ken Skipp (Thornaby), Peter & Peter Ward (Atherley), Mike & Robert Newman (Whiteknights) and Brian & Nicky Brett all won easily to move into the Quarter Finals on Saturday evening. The Quarter Finals saw Mike & Robert Newman (Whiteknights) establishing a lead of 16 - 8 after 13 ends, only to see Brian & Nicky Brett (Huntingdon) take six out of the last eight ends to win 25 -18. Whilst in the game between Roy & Shaun Nutman (Dorchester) and James & Gary Fitzgerald (Wey Valley), the Fitzgerald's clawed their way back to 15 - 18 after 19 ends (having been 17 - 5 down at 11 ends), only to see the Nutman's pull away again with two three's to win 24 -15.   In the Semi-Finals played on Sunday morning, Ian & David Drew (Carnmoggas) booked their place in the Final by establishing a 15 - 8 lead after 14 ends and withstanding a late comeback by Roy & Shaun Nutman (Dorchester), to eventually win 19 - 16. Similarly, Brain & Nicky Brett (Huntingdon) established a lead of 19 -12 after 19 ends and eventually won 19 -15 despite losing their last two ends to Glenn & Ken Skipp (Thornaby). In the Final, Brian & Nicky Brett (Huntingdon) became the 2001 Champions after emphatically beating Ian & David Drew (Carnmoggas), establishing a lead of 16 - 4 after 10 ends, and winning 28 - 7.
