REPORT ON FINALS

National Mixed Fours Championship 2001

The First Round games started on Saturday morning at Erewash IBC, with easy wins for Bridgwater BCL, Handy Cross, Erewash and Exonia.

Falcon hung on to beat Egham, 19 -18, with Egham achieving 3's on the eighteenth, twentieth and twenty first end. Egham in fact held four on the last end only to see Falcon skip (David Gildersleve) narrowly glance one of their woods out of the head with his last wood.

Kingsthorpe confirmed their place in the Quarter-Finals by taking a 2-3, on the nineteenth and twentieth end to lead Oyster 23-16 with one end to play.

Pinewood Park came back from being 12 -10 down at fourteen ends against Atherley, to win all of the remaining ends 1-1-1-2-2-5.

The Quarter Finals played on Saturday afternoon, saw Bridgwater BCL take a 5 on the second end to set them on the road to a 24 -14 victory over Falcon, by taking the last six ends 1-3-3-1-2.

Kingsthorpe had a lead of 16 -12 at sixteen ends only to then lose a five to Handy Cross. This encouraged Handy Cross who eventually went into the twenty first end leading 19 -17. Kingsthorpe
replied by taking a two to level the scores, thus taking the game into an extra end which was then won by Handy Cross.

Pinewood Park had a lead of 11 -4 at eight ends against Cumbria, and still led 16 -10 at eighteen ends. Cumbria then took a count of five only for Pinewood Park to take the last two ends 2-4 to move into the Semi-Finals 22 -15.

The local Erewash team led 14 -12 at sixteen ends against Exonia, only to then lose four of the last five ends, with Exonia running out the winners 20 -16.

In the Semi-Finals played on Sunday morning, Exonia and Pinewood Park were always within a few shots of each other until the eighteenth end, when with the scores all square at 16 -16, Exonia proceeded to score 4-6-1 to confirm their place in the Final.

Bridgwater BCL built up a commanding lead of 9-1 at six ends against Handy Cross and then stood 18-8 up at fifteen ends. Handy Cross tried to recover the position, winning five of the last six ends, but  eventually lost 20-15.

In the Final, Exonia scored 2-2-4-3-3-1-2-1-1 to take an unassailable lead of 19-0 at nine ends. Despite Bridgwater's best endeavours they could not recover this deficit and after the eighteenth end, the Exonia Rink of Ruth Bond, Christine Theedom, Simon Stevens and Ian Bond were crowned the 2001 National Mixed Fours Winners.
