REPORT ON FINALS

"Golden Charter" National Mixed Pairs Championship 2001

The First Round games started on Saturday morning with MidGlos having a real battle with Moonfleet 2000. MidGlos built up an early lead only to drop a six on the eighth end to make the score 8 - 8. Moonfleet 2000 then took a five on the next end only to then lose a six on the eleventh end, which then made the score 15 - 13 in favour of MidGlos. By the fifteenth end, MidGlos led 20 -14 after which Moonfleet scored 1-3-1-1-1-1 to move into the Second Round by a score of 22 -20.

Cheshunt and Oyster also had a real tussle. On the eleventh end, Oyster took a five to lead 12-11. On the fourteenth end, Cheshunt decided it was their turn for a five to lead 16-14 and eventually win 24 -20 by taking a two on the last end.

Newquay and York were all square at 10-10 after ten ends. On the fourteenth end Newquay achieved a count of four to lead 16 -11 only to then drop a three on the next end to make the score 16 -14. Both sides then scored singles for all of the remaining ends, with Newquay narrowly winning 19 -17.

In the Quarter Finals, played on Saturday afternoon, Moonfleet 2000 had an easy win against Cheshunt (26 - 11), whilst Desborough took three of the last four ends to come from behind against Newquay to win 16 -15. City of Ely withstood a late challenge from North Walsham to win 20 -16 whilst Hebburn confirmed their place in the Semi-Finals by defeating East Dorset 17 -12.

The Semi-Finals played on Sunday morning saw a good sized crowd enjoy two excellent games.

Sarah Seymour & Ian McWhinney (City of Ely) built up a comfortable lead of 16 - 6 after eleven ends. June Searle & John Crabb (Moonfleet) fought hard to recover the position, but on two occasions Ian McWhinney had "lady luck" was on his side which enabled him to take shot, and eventually and after further exciting ends of bowls, City of Ely confirmed their place in the Final.

Ann & Clive Knott (Hebburn) similarly built up a lead of 11 - 4 after seven ends after which Lorraine & Malcolm Woodley (Desborough) proceeded to take six of the next ends to make the score 15 - 17 at eighteen ends. Hebburn kept their cool taking the final three ends, 1-2-1 to move into the Final.

The Cambridge Chesterton IBC was packed on Sunday afternoon to see the local pairing of Sarah Seymour & Ian McWhinney (City of Ely) play Ann & Clive Knott (Hebburn). In a tightly fought contest, Ely built up a lead of 13-3 at eleven ends. Hebburn were not downhearted and proceeded to take a count of Five on the twelfth and fourteenth ends to make the score 15-13 in favour of Ely. By the nineteenth end Ely led 19 -17. Clive Knott killed the first attempt to play the twentieth end and was unlucky with a drawshot which glanced the jack in favour of Ely.

Sarah Seymour & Ian McWhinney confirmed their position as the 2001 "Golden Charter" National Mixed Pairs Champions by winning the last two ends 2-3 to win 24 -17.
