National Championship Finals
The "Golden Charter" Mixed Pairs Championship 1999/2000 played at Lincoln IBC between 21st & 23rd April
| The Final was played on
Easter Sunday morning between Bodmin (Brenda Smith & Duncan Hayne)
and Wellingborough (Mo Johnson & Paul Broderick). The game was
always tight with the players going into the last end all square at 18 -18.
The tension reached a peak when Paul Broderick stood on the mat with the
last wood of the end and lying Championship down. With Duncan Hayne sitting
away from the Green, unable to watch the final wood, Paul succeeded in
moving the Jack and kill the end. With the crowd feeling that it was impossible for the excitement to become greater, this time it was the turn of Duncan to face a Championship lie against. With his last wood Duncan proceeded to draw shot. Paul then with his last wood succeeded in trailing the Jack away from the shot wood, but failed to stay with the Jack, giving one shot to Brenda Smith & Duncan Hayne of Bodmin. The Championship had started on Good Friday morning, with over 400 people packed into the Lincoln Indoor Bowling Club. Lincoln (Penny Strong & Derek Johnson) held off the late challenge by Grantham (Pat Thomson & Dion Auckland) to win 24 - 22. Darlington (Tracy Fairless & Andrew Kirtland) recovered from being 9 - 16 down at 16 ends, to take counts of 5, 3 & 4 on the next three ends to eventually beat Wymondham Dell (Marjory Carpenter & John Ottaway). The game of the morning however was between Cumbria (Sue Flitcroft & Craig Docherty) and MidGlos (Glenis Hook & Tony Allcock). With never more than three shots between the teams, Craig Docherty drew shot with his last wood to win 22 -21. The remaining First Round games were played in the afternoon. Wellingborough (Mo Johnson & Paul Broderick) took six ends in succession to lead 19 -10, and eventually beat Risbygate (Janet Howe & Martin Rumball). Prince Arthur (Carol Anderson & Peter Springate) took the last seven ends against Westlecot (Jean Bird & Dave Snell), to win 20 - 12. In the game between Cheshunt (Dorothy Mascor & Fred Hurst) and Worthing (Wendy Davies & Tom Campbell), Cheshunt dropped a 5 on the 14th end, having previously led 18 - 9. This encouraged Worthing who made the scores level in the next two ends. With a 3 on the 19th end, Worthing took the lead for the first time and went on to win 23 - 21. Friday evening saw the Second Round games played in front of a packed Stadium. Bodmin recovered from being 5 - 11 down at the halfway stage, to beat Lincoln 21 -16 and Cambridge Chesterton held off the late challenge of Taunton Deane (Sue & Mike Evans) to win 21 -19, despite dropping a 5 on the 12th end. The Quarter Finals were played on Saturday morning in front of another good crowd. Hebburn pulled away in the last three ends to beat Whiteknights (Pat Pond & Robert Newman) 19 - 14, whilst Bodmin left it until the last two ends to make sure of victory over Avon Valley (Alice McPherson & Greg Moon). In the Semi-Finals, Wellingborough secured their place in the Final by taking five ends in succession to beat Hebburn 23 - 9, whilst Bodmin were always in control against Cumbria winning 27 - 10.
