National Championship Finals
National Singles Championship 1999/2000 played at Melton Mowbray 6th - 8th April
| The Final took place on
Saturday afternoon, between Greg Moon (Avon Valley) and Gary R.
Smith* (Sunderland). In a game that lasted 29 ends, Greg recovered from
going behind for the first time 20-19 on the 27th end, by taking singles on
the next two ends to become the English National Singles Champion. The First Round games had started on Thursday Evening, with close games between Rae Graham (Cumbria) and Peter Springate (Prince Arthur), 21-19 in favour of Rae after 26 ends; whilst Greg Moon took 27 ends to beat Paul Coleman (Wey Valley) 21-19. In the remaining games, Danny Denison* (Torquay) looked to be cruising at 17-2 after 13 ends, only for Steve McAlister (Leicester) to then take a 4 and gradually make the score respectable when Danny took a 2 on the 21st end to win the game. The remaining First Round games, on Friday morning, saw two further tight games, with Robert Newman* (Whiteknights) losing 19-21 to Mark Walton (Ryedale), whilst Peter Ward* (Atherley) took a 2 to beat Chris Messer (Clevedon) 21-20. In the remaining games Bill Hobart (Boston), the England Team Manager beat Darren Hickin (Stevenage) 21-15, Gary R. Smith* beat Tony Waller (Herga) 21-12 and Mervyn King* (Pinewood Park) beat Ian Walker (Kingsthorpe) 21-11. The game of the Second Round was between Danny Dennison and Derek Dyer (Eastbourne). At 19-6, Danny must have thought that he had won the game, however by the 21st end, the game was tied at 20-20, Danny had to draw shot with his last bowl to proceed into the Quarter Finals. The Quarter Finals played on Friday night, provided the spectators with an excellent display of Singles play with each end producing tight heads. Gary R. Smith held off the challenge of Peter Ward (Atherley), whilst Greg Moon took the last four ends to beat Danny Denison. Duncan Robinson (Nottingham) withstood the late run by Simon Skelton (Scunthorpe) who recovered to 15-16, having been at one time 14-8 down. In the remaining Quarter-Final, which took over 3 hours to complete, Mark Walton won 21-20. On Saturday morning, Greg Moon beat Duncan Robinson 21-3, whilst Gary R. Smith waited until the 20th end to take a full house of 4 against Mark Walton, to win a place in the Final 21-20.
