Obituary: David J. Bryant CBE
The English Indoor Bowling Association is saddened to learn of the
passing of the man regarded by many as the greatest lawn bowler of
all time, David J. Bryant CBE, at the age of 88.
David won
five Commonwealth Games gold medals, eleven World Outdoor Bowls
Championship medals and nine titles at the World Indoor
Championships during an illustrious career.
He was widely
recognisable as the face of bowls and was renowned for using a
tobacco pipe whilst playing. He was awarded the MBE and then CBE for
services to lawn bowls.
Peter Thompson, Chief Executive,
said: “David was an icon, whose name was synonymous with the sport
of flat green bowls both in and outside the bowling community. He
was well respected by all and he always found time to advise and
guide many younger bowlers. He will be sorely missed.”
At the
World Indoor Championships, David won no fewer than nine World
Championships – three singles and six pairs titles with Tony Allcock
OBE.
He represented England at the British Isles Indoor
Series for 27 years, his first appearance was 1965 in Cardiff and
his last was 1992 in Teignbridge (England).
He achieved
great success in the National Indoor Championships winning 10
Titles: -
• National Singles – 1963/64, 1964/65,
1966/67,1968/69, 1970/71, 1971/72, 1976/77, 1978/79, 1982/83
•
National Pairs – 1981/82 with David Rhys Jones.
The English
Indoor Bowling Association sends its condolences to wife Ruth and
the rest of David’s family and friends. His service to the sport
will not be forgotten and he will be missed by many.
