SUPPORTING PARA BOWLERS: NEW CLASSIFICATION GUIDANCE AND A CALL FOR
CLASSIFIERS
The EIBA, in partnership with Bowls England and
International Bowls for the Disabled, is continuing its work to
ensure para bowlers can compete fairly and confidently at both
national and international levels.
Classification is a vital step
for para bowlers who want to take part in classified competitions
organised by BE and the EIBA, or who aspire to represent England
internationally.
By maintaining
an up-to-date classification database and running regular clinics,
we can ensure athletes are assessed consistently and given the
correct category (B5, B6, B7 or B8) based on their impairment and
ability on the green.
Clinics
are held around the country every three months, usually lasting 4-5
hours, and are led by two IBD classifiers: >
Gill Albone, Technical Classifier, who carries out the physical
assessment. > Sue Davies, Non-Technical
Classifier, who supports the wider process and assessment.
Together, they make sure each bowler is given the right
classification to support their bowling journey.
A
rewarding voluntary role With Sue Davies preparing to
retire, there is now an exciting opportunity for a new volunteer to
step into the role of IBD Technical Classifier. Sue explains:
"When I first became interested in the role, I shadowed a qualified
classifier at two or three clinics to understand what was involved.
It's voluntary, but expenses are covered - and it's incredibly
rewarding to help para bowlers move forward in their bowling
career."
New classifiers receive training and guidance from
the IBD Head Classifier, including a Zoom induction, paperwork, and
a qualification test paper. Shadowing experienced classifiers at
clinics is also part of the pathway.

Why it matters This work is crucial in ensuring
para bowlers receive the right support and opportunities to thrive
in the sport. Classifications aren't just about eligibility -
they're about fairness, accessibility, and giving every bowler the
chance to perform at their best.
One VI player said:
"Classification has opened doors for me. It gives me the chance to
represent my country and play against athletes from other Countries.
"For anyone with a visual impairment considering
classification I would make sure you speak to the Optician first to
make sure they are able to complete the LOGMAR tests that are
required before you book your appointment."
Another para
bowler added: "Since I lost my leg, bowls has become an important
part of my life, classification means I can compete on a level
playing field against players who have similar challenges to me.
"My ambition is to play for my country and classification gives
me the opportunity to one day hopefully achieve my goal. It's not
something to be afraid of, and the process is simple and the
classifiers were friendly and approachable, as well as being
knowledgeable and fair."
