AMY PHAROAH RELISHING ENGLAND RETURN AND NEW INDOOR CHALLENGE
Amy Pharoah is embracing the opportunity to pull on the
England shirt once again, as part of an exciting return to the
international stage and the challenge of indoor bowls.
A well-known face outdoors, Amy
has enjoyed a highly successful career on the green, representing
England in Commonwealth Games, World Championships and winning
numerous national and British titles.
"I am
so excited about being selected to play in the indoor international
team - it's always an honour to pull on the England shirt," she
said. "It's been a long time since I last played - 2011 - and I'm
really looking forward to the challenge, playing with some old faces
and alongside some new ones too."
Amy's return to
high-performance bowls indoors has been a gradual but determined
journey, sparked by a visit to the Indoor National Championships a
couple of years ago.
"Me and my dad went to have a watch and catch up with people,
and that sparked my interest again," she explained. "With my son
Harry being older and more independent, it seemed slightly easier to
pick it up again. And then obviously this year, with the
Commonwealth Games, that was extra incentive."
Since then,
Amy has thrown herself into the indoor game, enjoying the learning
curve that comes with competing in a different environment.
"Indoors is a new challenge for me and I'm learning every game," she
said.
One of the standout moments of her indoor career to
date came at the World Open Singles in 2005, where she made history
by qualifying as a woman in the event.
"My greatest
achievement indoors would be qualifying in the World Open Singles -
as a woman, qualifying was brilliant," she said. "Sadly Robert
Newman beat me on a tie break in the first game, but these things
happen," she added with a laugh.
As the season progresses,
Amy has a clear performance mindset.
"My aims for this season
- obviously I have been part of the Commonwealth Games process and
that would be great," she said. "But I have smaller process goals
related to performance rather than outcomes."
