CHARLIE BEETON: A SEASON TO REMEMBER
For a player still in the early stages of his career,
Charlie Beeton has enjoyed a fantastic season packed full of
highlights.
After winning the EIBA National
Under-25 Singles last year, Charlie was part of England's victorious
BIIBC Men's Under-25 series team and qualified for the national
fours at Nottingham, where he skipped his team through to the
quarter final stages.
Winning the British Isles Under-25 Singles title in Belfast in
March, however, stands out as a defining moment.
"It felt
really surreal," Charlie reflects. "It took a few days to sink in
and actually realise what I had achieved."
The championship
itself was anything but straightforward. Charlie's opening match
against Owain Lebreton from Wales set the tone, and came down to a
nail-biting finish. After edging ahead to 20 - 12, Charlie saw his
opponent battle back to 20 - 19. Under pressure, he delivered when
it mattered most, hitting the jack with his first bowl and holding
on for a 21 - 19 victory.
The second game, against Jersey's
Taylor Greechan, offered a little more breathing room, with Charlie
securing a composed 21 - 10 win. But the final brought drama once
again. Facing Scotland's Astyn McKechnie, he built a 20 - 15 lead
before another late surge saw the scoreline tighten to 20 - 19. For
the second time in the competition, Charlie produced a decisive
final bowl to clinch the title 21 - 19.
He says bowls has
helped him develop patience and discipline: "I love the competitive
nature of bowls and that there is always room for improvement," he
says. "As a very competitive person, I enjoy pushing myself to be
the best player I can be."

Introduced to bowls by his grandfather on the back green at
Felixstowe at just five years old, a birthday gift of junior bowls
soon followed, and from that moment, the path was set.
Since
then, his progress has been steady and impressive. Alongside his
recent titles, Charlie counts the British Isles Under-18 Singles
crown and captaining England's Under-18 squads, both indoors and
outdoors, among his proudest achievements.
"There isn't a
better feeling than pulling on an England shirt," he says.
"Especially in team events, the atmosphere is amazing, and that's
what I play bowls for."
Like many young players, Charlie has
drawn inspiration from the very best. He cites Alex Marshall and
Paul Foster as his idols, admiring their approach to the game and
modelling elements of his own style on their success.
Looking
ahead, his ambitions are as bold.
"My long-term goals are to
compete in the Commonwealth Games and World Championships," he says.
"I'd also love to play in the Australian BPL and my ultimate aim is
to become a World Champion of Champions and to win Commonwealth
gold."
